Classic Movie Posters - Your Dorm Room Will Be Hip With These!

by Daniel Wright

While finding the hottest new trend is always easy on a college campus, sometimes the hot new trend is an old one that came back again. In the 1960s lava lamps and beads decorated every bedroom and Volkswagen Van in sight and in the 1990s they were spotted in nearly every girl's college dorm room. In the 1960s and the 1970s, psychedelic colored posters and black lights were all the rage. In the mid 1990s, they were back again in full force. So, what is this years' crop of college freshman decorating their walls with?

Vintage movie posters are populating walls from Hudson University to UCLA and everywhere in between. Girls that weren't even a glimmer in their parents' eyes when "Breakfast at Tiffany's" was released are hanging Audrey on their walls and purchasing dark sunglasses and pearl necklaces. Classic movie posters from A-list hits like "Scarface" to D-list wonders like "Evil Dead" are hung daily. The black and white posters are just the tip of the movie memorabilia mountain.

What is the reason that twenty year old men and women are reaching back to the days of drive in movies and black and white pictures? No one knows for sure, but maybe they are yearning for a more simple time when humor was light hearted and times were easier to understand or maybe it is just the allure of classics that caught a hold of them again.

Classic movie posters are only the beginning. Intelligent marketers from around the country are making millions in merchandising. Everything from catch phrase t-shirts to freestanding figurines and accessories from the films can be found in local shopping malls. Vintage movie posters are more popular than ever. At poster sales on college campuses across the country are selling out of "Dracula" and "The Blob" posters faster than newer films. Vintage movie posters are more popular than ever.

Posters may bring back the magic of some other time and a fantasy of what may have been. They help to capture the spirit of an age that you wish you'd lived in or else they help to keep memories alive. Some students will put up posters to remind themselves of their childhood or high school years, while some will put them up to let others know just who they are. Independent art/film posters and vintage film posters used to be displayed only on film students' walls, but now the audience for them is a great deal larger.

More than twenty years ago most American teens had posters displaying the sexy Faye Dunaway or the incredible Elvis Presley hanging from their wall. Today, the hottest trends with teens in posters are those same figures that were popular way back then. These iconic representations are the perfect gift for that young man or lady in your life, and can give them the same expression of happiness that they gave an older generation upon receipt.
